Although it is one of the smaller residential coastal communities in Palm Beach County, Lantana is also one of the oldest and possibly one of the most interesting. This is a town that has managed to retain most of the charm of its origins as a Florida fishing village, even in the face of the development going on in towns and cities all around it.
The first known residents of the land which would become the town were a Mr. M.B Lyman and his family who took up residence in 1888 and began several different businesses in the area. Lyman dubbed the town Lantana Point after a wild plant that was abundant in the area at the time. “The Point” was rather quickly dropped though and the town was then simply known as Lantana.
When it was incorporated in 1921, the Town of Lantana was a mere one square mile with a population of just 100 full time residents. Today, the Town covers 2 squares miles of land and the number of permanent residents who own Lantana homes is 9,500 which swells to around 13,500 when the owners of Lantana vacation homes come to town in the winter.
Lantana does have a public beach that is quiet and secluded and there are a number of open parklands for those who own Lantana homes to explore. Residents also enjoy quick and easy access to all that the neighboring Palm Beach County towns have to offer as well.
Homes for sale in Lantana can be found in many different sizes, styles and price ranges. A simple single family home can be purchased for as little $75,000 while the upper end of the Lantana real estate market reaches the several million dollar mark, the price commanded by some rather spectacular ocean front Lantana properties. There are also town homes, apartments and condos available for sale and there are a number of excellent senior communities in the town as well.
